Locals knew to stay away from its tempting massif and dared not venture past the tree and vegetation lines-they only climbed this far to herd their livestock. In mid-July of 1865, however, Edward Whymper scaled the summit, but several of his team members were killed during the descent.

It took another 60 years before Matterhorn-or more exactly Zermatt, Switzerland-started seeing the influx of visitors, namely who arrived for a ski holiday in the anecdotal European retreat. It was on the one hand for the far and few between who could endure the traveling time to get to Zermatt, but it was on the other for those who could front the expense of such a traveling endeavor. You see, the rich got it all to themselves. Today, of course, with the world becoming a smaller place and the distributions of funds more evenly spread out, Zermatt sees more than its fair-share of all-class guest.

So, you ask, what is Zermatt like? Nearly ninety-nine percent of all the establishments-restaurants, pubs, discos, hotels-and all the houses-apartments, chateaux, and villas-are the same height, by city mandate. Transportation is either ...
... on foot, by horse (carriages) or electric taxis. No one is allowed to have a car here, so the town is always crisp, quiet, clean and pleasantly perfect. The town proper houses less than 6,000 people. During a holiday day, though, Zermatt (Swiss ski resort) can mushroom to over 25,000 people. With 200 km of ski trails and slopes, mind you, Zermatt can handle three to four times this.

Zermatt has three main ski areas. Each is said to be roughly towering more than 3,000-meters, facing north. All three, moreover, offer fresh powder during the ski season. Apparently, there's near thirty mountains all penetrating the 4,000-meter mark.

Generally, the slopes in this part of the Alps (and all over Europe for that matter) close quite early because of less day time. Zermatt, conversely, stays open until 4 o'clock and sometimes 6 0'clock, depending on the season. Plus, as long as global warming microwaves the planet, Zermatt's Swiss ski resort's season is for all intents and purpose open seven months a year-that's from November till May-all skiing, all fun, all fresh, all the time! During the summer, Zermatt has nine full time ski lifts open, gating way to over 25 km of downgrades to help you fine-tune your aptness.

Skiers of all levels, abilities, shapes and sizes can find their latitude in this altitude. That is to say, there's something for everyone in Zermatt Swiss ski resort. It's easy to remember Zermatt's ski quarters with the acronym KiSSinG-as you'll be KiSSinG the snow if you ski out of your limits! KiSSinG stands for Klein Matterhorn, Schwarzsee, Sunnegga and Gornergrat ski areas (the i, i, n stand for nothing).

If you're a neophyte, then be prepared for long and perhaps steeper than usual runs. If you're transitional-in between beginner and advanced-then Zermatt resorts probably offers the longest and best practice runs the world over. If you're advanced, try the National Gant, the Triftji or the Aroleid on for size. These hint-of-danger will bump and grind you all the way down with plenty of deep snow. Make sure you know what you're doing before calling yourself advanced. Local guides and instructors can keep you within your safe within your limits.
