The problem of financial crisis is not ready to settle down so far and easily. Mervyn King, Bank of England Governor said that even after a long time, Britain still faces a long way back to pre-crisis economic growth rates as the banks are still reducing their balance sheets. He also said that he sees no economic reason why they cannot in the long run go back to the sort of growth rates that they had like before. And once they overcome through this crisis they will be able to get back to that sort of period again, but it will take some time.
It is noticed that Britain's recovery from the 2007-2009 crisis has been very sluggish. In fact, some economists believe that the country's potential to grow has been severely damaged with the passage of time. That could make the medium-term growth view of the Bank of England and the government. The recovery of Britain had been lagging the rebound in the United States because of the government's austerity measures, a lack of credit from banks and the hit to consumers from higher energy prices, adding that the differences should recede soon.
As the hands of government are tied ...
... by its oath to erase a huge budget deficit, the pressure to improve and boost growth rate remains on the central bank. On the question whether Mr. King thought more easing might be necessary, he only replied that the Monetary Policy Committee took its decision on a month-by-month basis. He also said that they are prepared to change their minds each and every month and if they were to do more, it would be in the form of conventional gilt purchases. The central bank sanctioned a 50 billion pound extension of its asset purchases to a total of 325 billion pounds, in which David Miles and Posen voted for a larger increase in February. And after March meeting, it indicated growing concern about the impact of higher oil prices and future wage rises on inflation among policymakers, though Miles and Posen again voted for an increase in the asset purchase total. However, the central bank governor Mr. King gave no indication whether he thought that the fragile recovery needed yet another cash injection or not.
