If you really want to enjoy an affordable vacation, there are ways to save beyond simply the purchase of cheap airplane tickets or cheap vacation packages. A little planning can save a lot of money on food expenses while traveling.

The following are a variety of ways to save while on the road:

• Shop for food at your destination supermarkets, small groceries, farmers’ markets, and even drug stores with pantry aisles. Fresh bread, a couple of slices of meat and/or cheese and a piece of fruit can make a very satisfying inexpensive meal.

• Bring quart and gallon size zip top bags for packing leftovers.

• Order small amounts of pay by weight food from deli’s and only purchase as much as you think you will really eat.

• Check out markets and small bakeries in the late afternoon since often some will sell baked good at half price rather than tossing them.
