A connection to the internet with out protection is like leaving your front door wide open in town with a note pinned to the door saying "everyone welcome".All the terms connected with the computer like virus,firewalls,trojans,adware,worms etc will be kept at away with the anti- virus software that came with the computer doesn't always apply.
The first thing you need is a firewall, this is the first step to protecting your computer,this stops hackers and bad programmes getting through although nothing is 100% safe from the most determined attacker,so a good anti-virus is essential to look out for any that do get passed.
Something which can get still through though is spyware , this could be connected to emails,music files,games,etc and allows people to see what you are doing,breaching your security in regards to passwords ,financial sites and bank details.the only way to stop this problem is to have a dedicated programme that protects against this,detecting and removing them.
