Maserati Quattroporte: Technology, Transmission, Chassis And Suspension
The Maserati Quattroporte gives the Trident luxury sport sedan thrilling performance and superior comfort.
The eight-cylinder 4,244 cc 90V° engine delivers its power in a specially designed way to provide the maximum on-board comfort and smooth gear changes without scarifying superior performance typical of each Maserati model. The torque curve reaches its peak at 339 lb-ft at 4,750 rpm whether the Quattroporte performance is among the best in the luxury sedan category reaching 405 bhp power output, 0-60 mph acceleration of 5.5 seconds and top speed of 164 mph.
The 4.2 liter engine along with the gearbox management proves fluidity and smooth gearshifts without compromising power or speed. The ZF German transmission delivers smoothness at low to mid revs but it also brings cutting edge performance with gear changes right up to the 7,200 rpm redline. The driver can modify the transmission response to match his/her own driving style and to best suit the road conditions simply by pressing the Low Grip or Sport buttons. Low Grip is best when the road surface is icy or slick. Selecting the Sport button, the driver makes ...
... the transmission more aggressive and the emphasis is placed on performance with faster changes at higher revs. For an even sportier drive, the Maserati Quattroporte can be driven in manual mode by moving the shift lever located on the center tunnel to the left similar to what happen in sequentially shifted race cars. Just like in a Maserati race car, the paddles are located in the steering column, with the left paddle for downshift and the right paddles for upshifts. The Sport setting can be used in automatic or manual shifting modes, with the manual/sport combination providing the most engaging driving experience.
The Maserati Quattroporte chassis allows a thrilling drive while providing superior levels of comfort and safety. The car’s torsional stiffness results in a balanced handling while enhancing the driving experience. With its forged aluminum arms and hubs, the Quattroporte’s front and rear double wishbone suspension features ‘anti-dive’ and ‘anti-squad’ geometry to prevent the front end dipping under braking and the rear end squatting under acceleration. The suspension can be further upgraded with the optional Skyhook suspension system to controls the shock damping in response to driver input to the car as well as road conditions.
The optional Skyhook electronically controlled suspension system provides automatic and regular damping adjustment and allow the driver to maintain maximum comfort level on board while adapting to his/her driving style. There are two different settings in the Skyhook suspension system: normal and sport. The ride is softer and more comfortable in normal mode whereas the driver can switch to Sport mode at any time to enhance the Quattroporte’s sporty nature and performance.
