Driving Is Fun, Only When You Know It Well

Yes, it was my dream to learn driving but due to circumstances that were never under my control, whenever I initiated the process something or the other always proved as a roadblock and I could never finish the process of learning driving completely. Nevertheless, driving has held such special place in my heart that I decided that whatever little knowledge of driving I have, I will use it when and ever I get an opportunity.

As a result, when my husband bought a new car, the very first thing that came to my mind was to lay my hands on the steering wheel and I was always on the lookout for an opportunity. My husband is well aware of my driving skills and he made sure that I seldom get that chance.

Nevertheless, one fine day, after much coaxing and cajoling, I convinced my husband to hand over the car to me and he agreed with much reluctance. I told him he could sit next to me, while I would take a short trip along the service road. And together we set-out for a short drive on a Sunday evening.

The service road was empty and it was quite a pleasure to drive slowly. My husband too heaved a great sigh of relief ...
... as he presumed that I would manage quite well in the existing traffic flow. The first fifteen minutes were easy and smooth. Road was barren and quite manageable. Slowly I too started getting confident behind the wheels and that was my mistake. As we approached the nearest intersection and my husband was enjoying watching outside the window, I took a steep turn and headed straight on the road. My husband screamed in fury and was pestering me to return. My argument was that the road was anyways empty but just as I said that, I saw trucks heading in my directions and out of anxiety, I started shifting the wrong gear. Speed increased and my balance was dwindling. The car seemed to be flowing in the wind totally out of my control. My husband was gibbering from the side, I obviously couldn’t hear what he said. Then I took a turn again and bang a collision with vertically piercing poles on the middle of the road.

I had closed my eyes and was scared to open them fearing I would see that my car’s bonnet was completely gone. Thank god for they were flexible bollards. It could have turned out to be a major accident had it not been a flexible bollard made of fiber. Oh, how I thank my god even today.

Soon, cops from the nearest security barriers came running towards us. They were keeping the gate on a Sunday evening at their designated security barriers so that all ran smooth on the road. They helped us turn the car. My husband did not say anything to me, but that became the last day I could ever use his car.
