Driving In The Night? Keep Your Eyes Open

This goes out to all who drive in the night frequently. More than short distances, long journeys in the night require more energy and effort from the driver’s end. In this article, I am going to narrate one such night driving experience that opened my eyes about more serious aspects of life.

I was driving from Agra to Delhi after finishing an official assignment. Even though I could have chosen to drive the next morning, but I still preferred night thinking that next day being the weekend, I could enjoy better things. Tired after a daylong meeting, I finished my dinner and then started again to finish the next lap. My body was aching and I was a bit sleepy. Even worse as I had eaten, now the process of digestion was taking all the energy and I was really tired and drowsy.

Anyhow, I thought of not paying much attention to my physical discomfort and ignoring these minor things, I decided to move on. The first twenty minutes ran smooth. I could overcome my desire to sleep and had managed to drive without any hiccups. After some time I had pulled down the window and was enjoying the breeze. I slowly started getting ...
... comfortable behind the wheels. From 60 to 80 and then to 100, my speedometer was pointing at higher and higher speed. I was enjoying the car getting lighter every minute; it was like driving on an endless road at an endless speed. Wow… it all seemed so nice, I felt as if I was on my bed under the quilt just gearing up to sleep and woosh… “Oh my god,” I screamed out as I saw the illuminated column that I almost hit. I had actually fallen asleep and was about to run into a construction barrier placed on the road. I surely missed the caution board that must have been placed on the road and had eneterd the area where construction was going on.

Thank god for the column protector placed on the road. Had I not seen the surface lit, I would have certainly hit the construction barrier that could have caused severe damage to my car. I thanked people who had installed column protectors on the road as had it not been there, I don’t know what would have happened. And ever since then, I always advise my friends to keep their eyes open if they have to drive in the night. Even better, avoid it.
