Controlling industrial combustion by monitoring flue gases was the primary job of the original CEM system. Over time, industry started to focus more on environmental regulation and the continuous emissions monitoring system began to be used to monitor pollutants within gas emissions. Present day CEMs can monitor a wide range of articles within fluid emissions and has multiple purposes. These systems have moved from being vast, expensive to maintain complexes of piping and alarms to low-cost, elegant systems due to industry and regulator demand.

Businesses developed modern CEM analyzers in response to the growing need for a monitoring method that could help them determine the amount of pollutants within their emissions. CEMs sensors are also able to monitor a much lower amount of particulate matter present in emissions. Flue stack emissions do have very low levels of pollution, down to as low as two hundred parts per million. The sort of CEM device is used at the plant is determined by what pollutants the company is looking for and also local needs. Each area will have its own laws and regulations regarding emissions ...

The CEM can monitor a variety of gases and particulate including, carbon dioxide, sulfur and nitrogen oxides and CO and hydrocarbons. Of course, the CEM System can detect a wide range of particulate matter depending on the need. Frequently, these devices will include various filters through which gases are drawn in order to catch particulate matter within. The system then analyses the contained material to determine the volume of each different particulate present in the gas emissions of a facility.

The Extractive CEM and In-Situ Folded Beams are just two of the several different kinds of CEM analyzers on the market. The Extractive CEM relies on an approach similar to what is described in the last paragraph. While the In-Situ Folded Beam uses a slotted metal cylinder designed to retain gases as they rise within the stack. Within the tube, a transmitter sends UV light into the tube that would reflect off of a mirror and back towards a receiver. Important data about the composition of the gases within the stack can be retained from its effects on the UV light.

Companies have a selection of options to choose from for equipment monitoring including in-service oil analysis and acoustics monitoring. This is only applicable to one half of the industry. Companies also need to locate the right system to monitor their emissions to preserve the environment and meet EPA regulations.
