Santiago Is A Holy City In Spain

There are three holy cities of Christians in the world. One of them is Santiago de Compostela in Spain. The other two are Jerusalem and Rome. All three of these cities hold special importance among the Christians. There are many Christians that head towards these cities for pilgrimage in order to refine their souls.

There is a reason which makes Santiago de Compostela a holy city in the world. Saint James did holy work in Galicia and he headed towards this city. He was buried later in Galicia but his contributions to this city have made it important for Christians all around the world. A church was built in the era of King Alphonso in the memory of Saint James. The place is very much an attraction for the pilgrims even in this era for the same reasons.

There are six ways by which pilgrimage to Santiago can be made. These include the French way, Portuguese way, English way, the silver route, the northern route and the maritime routes. The pilgrimage is very much easy in Santiago in this era. The reason is that there are many pilgrims that cover distances with the help of boats, cars and horses. That helps them to complete the pilgrimage while coming from any of the ways. That also helps the natives of many other European cities to perform pilgrimage. The final step of pilgrimage is performed in the cathedral. Similarly many pilgrims prefer to obtain a certificate of pilgrimage. It is called La Compostela and it can be obtained easily from Pilgrimage office in the city.

There are freebies offered to the pilgrims by the local authorities. For example there are three meals offered free of cost for one day to those that perform the pilgrimage. Good aspect is that there is a room for pilgrims in a Parador villa spanien known as Hostal dos Reis Catolicos. The certificate of pilgrimage is also a freebie. The city remains holy whole year but a fact is that there are more pilgrims in the summer months to the city.
