Microsoft’s SharePoint consultants are more in demand due to their outstanding assistance on SharePoint development and SharePoint customization. The later one SharePoint customization is an immensely beneficial solution for most businesses allowing them to work in an organized, collaborative and efficient manner. Thus SharePoint customization allows accomplishing all the tasks very efficiently and successfully.
SharePoint consultants and developers are facing some issues from users that they are not being able to open up the PDF files from the portal but need to save them initially. This annoys them a bit but here this article will describe a way that will relieve them from this issue. Why it is so? Just because of its default settings of not considering PDF files being safe to open up in the browser. Further security is being added to SharePoint 2010 which is handled by the browser. Here this browser forces the user to save the files first which is placed on the local disk and then can be opened. The platform has list of MIME types that are permitted for opening in the browser directly but sadly PDF is not included ...
... in those types.
How this problem can be solved? There is an answer to this with a simple web app setting. This setting of web app can be defined as Browser File Handling. The users or SharePoint consultants can find this particular thing in General settings given in the web application. There are two options given in those settings, one is permissive and other is strict. Let us see some more details below:
Browser File Handling: Here it is specified whether the documents that serve to web browsers are being added with additional security headers or not. Headers here describe that a browser need to display a prompt download for certain types of files and use the specified MIME type for other files.
Permissive: This status describes that here there are no headers added and it provides a more compatible user experience.
Strict: This one forces the browser to download certain types of files which is because of added browsers. The download which is forced participates in improving security of the server which is because of disallowing of automatic execution of web content that is uploaded by contributors.
When the default setting is on Strict the meaning here is that only those MIME types which are on the list are only allowed for the user to be opened in the browser directly. Here you are required to set the setting on Permissive wherein there will be no addition of security headers and thus the browser will allow you to open directly of any file you require. You are finished now and have succeeded in doing so with just a simple setting.
SharePoint customization allows users to share, upload and access documents and information remotely. It is a wonderful platform with Microsoft’s added advantage while increasing its fame and services all over the world.
