Someone asked me recently why in ultra casual Del Mar there are so many hair salons. Obviously even here a woman’s hair is her crowning glory. We all know this old adage, so no wonder hair salons are so numerous. Some cultures even consider a woman’s hair too potently erotic for men other than one’s husband to view. But aside from its allure, how we choose to wear our hair is often (adolescence here come to mind with their experimentation) a statement of identity. Remember the musical Hair as a statement of identity for an entire generation? So even though hair is sometimes regarded as a vanity industry clearly there is something much more than vanity going on here.

This focus on a woman’s hair has given rise to an entire industry of hair salons and supporting products so numerous that in many cities there may be more than one on every block. With so many to choose from and each one promising to fit your particular needs best, it is no wonder as a consumer choosing the right one can be a daunting task in itself. I don’t want anyone to see me. I will have no credibility.” How much our credibility as a person is tied to how we look is something as a professional I have always in the back of my mind.

And my approach differs as well in that I do not give been what I consider glamour colors. No reds, no gold’s, just drab ashen shades that will blend with grey subtly, thus resulting in a blending of grey rather than total coverage. The point being to reduce the amount of grey in a way that no one notices.

With so much at stake it is clear more than vanity is at stake here so how does one go about choosing the salon for you? It’s really not so hard but it may take a little time for research. You probably already have a range of how much you wish to pay. Budget salons are after selling price and high end salons are selling quality work and or luxury experience. Do you like a feeling of intimacy as in small boutique salons or do you like the feel you get in a large establishment? Within that you can take advantage of the fact that hairdressers and salons universally encourage free consultations. Take advantage of this and you will undoubtedly find one with whom you feel a rapport and gives you that feeling that you are in good hands. I would not be surprised if the hair salon you end up choosing also fits your own particular identity as well. I feel my salon is a reflection of my own varied self…it is casual Del Mar but at the same time with an urban feel.
