Spinal Disc – The Shock Absorbers Of Our Body
The way vehicles need shock absorbers to dampen the sudden and rapid motion we need the spinal discs which act as shock absorbers in our body. These discs are one of the most important parts as they absorb any strong impact caused due to movements providing stability to the body. Spine also known as the backbone is a vital part and is made up of 33 bones or vertebrae. It is divided into three groups the cervical spine (neck region), thoracic spine (upper back region) and lumbar spine (lower back region).
Spine plays an important role bearing most of our body weight. It protects the spinal cord and helps us in standing erect and also in our movements. The spinal discs are found between the vertebrae which prevents the bones from coming in contact with each other. The spinal discs have the tough fibrous tissue in the center which acts as the shock absorbers. The impact by our movements which can affect the skull is absorbed by the spinal disc.
Things move smoothly until the discs sit in the right place and perform their job. If the disc bulges or ruptures from its position it is called disc herniation which is commonly ...
... known as slip disc. This herniated disc applies pressure on the nerves in close proximity causing severe pain which shoots to the arms or the legs depending upon the location of the herniated disc.
What causes Disc Hernation?
Wear and tear of the disc or disc degeneration
Injuries to spine due to accidents and trauma
Heavy strain on the back due to activities like bending and lifting
Poor or incorrect posture
Sports related injuries
The very common symptoms seen in cases of herniated disc are pain which is felt like electric shock, tingling sensation, numbness, weakness in muscles and bowel or bladder problems. However this problem may go unnoticed for a long time and if any symptoms are displayed it depends upon the area affected. With the complications involved this problem calls for immediate medical intervention as it may affect your day to day activities.
As the spine and spinal discs play an important role any problem related to the spine must be handled with great care.
