Maternity health insurance is an undeniably necessary benefit for all new couples especially those who are seriously considering having children. It's not unheard of for a routine pregnancy to cost anywhere close to ten thousand dollars and for one with complications to go much higher than that. If a birth should happen to be early the costs to care for the child can rapidly get out of control. The simplest thing to do, of course, is to have the proper insurance in place before getting pregnant.

If you're not yet pregnant and you're employed then the first place to look is at your employer's group health plans, if offered, which are usually cheaper and more indulgent as to eligibility requirements and waiting periods. Not all employers offer group health insurance plans and not all of those types of plans cover maternity costs but of all the insurance options, the group plans are the best place to start when you're not already pregnant. Talk with the benefits specialist to find out what if anything is covered. If your employer's plans don't include maternity benefits then check with your spouse's plan to see if ...
... maternity benefits are offered and if you can be added on. If you're not able to find insurance that covers actual maternity expenses, it's possible that the insurance you are able to obtain will cover illnesses and complications associated with a pregnancy or childbirth.

If group insurance is unavailable then an individual health insurance plan may be the next best thing. However, give this type of policy extra scrutiny as it's not unusual for these types of policies to completely disregard any type of maternity benefits. If an individual plan does support maternity expenses, take a look at the requisite deductible amounts which are oftentimes very costly over the long term. Many maternity health plans will cover typical or common pregnancy complications yet they won't cover the more routine pre-natal activities like a common doctor's visit. The benefits contained within private and individual plans differ on a state by state basis and can be very dissimilar in adjoining states.

Maternity health insurance is best purchased when you're not yet pregnant otherwise you can still get it but it'll be a lot tougher to qualify for and the benefits may be a lot more restrictive. If you're pregnant and needing health insurance, your condition will be considered a pre-existing one which means that you'll be using up more insurance dollars than you actually paid in thus forcing the insurance company to take a loss. A woman can still get insurance but her choices will be a bit more limited.

If you're already pregnant and are searching for insurance, you can look into the solutions mentioned above. However, if you're income is low there are some federal and state insurance options that could be available if your income is under certain levels. There are a number of low cost hospitals and clinics that use federal and state grant money to offer services for low-income earners and do have good maternity care programs available. The same is true for your local Department of Health and Human services.

Health insurance overall is becoming ever more expensive and that is even truer when it comes to maternity health insurance if it is offered at all. In many cases it is severely limited as to what is covered and differs greatly depending upon where you live and work and the state in which the insurance company is headquartered. Coverage for even the most routine maternal care is becoming harder and harder to get and if you're in a position of needing special attention for help in becoming pregnant and require a specialty coverage like infertility insurance then the costs can be prohibitive. Just a bit of planning ahead can save you from huge headaches when you need your time for more important things during your pregnancy.
