Plan Your New Mexico Long Term Care Carefully

If presidential candidate Mitt Romney makes it as the next leader of the nation will New Mexico long term care costs go down?
Just because he has Mexican blood? Don’t count on it.
Contrary to reports that Mitt Romney is the crowd favorite among elderly folks, a bigger percentage of senior citizens strongly believe that he is out to kill their health care by taking out Medicare and Social Security which are very important programs to them.
Many people are affected by the health care plans of the former governor of Massachusetts as they still hold on to the belief that should they require long term care (LTC), Medicare will step in. Unfortunately, that is never going to happen.
It’s true that Medicare should not be taken away because it is vital to the health care aspect of elderly Americans 65 years old and older and those who are in need of medical care. Meanwhile, if you are suffering infirmity but you do not have a medical condition you won’t be eligible for Medicare services.
Simply put, Medicare is important and no doubt should remain where it is but people should not treat ...
... it as a security blanket for their LTC needs because the mentioned federal insurance program is not and has never been designed for LTC.
It’s long term care insurance (LTCI) that was designed to provide LTC coverage in any type of setting. As a matter of fact, New Mexicans are expected to have LTCI policies as the cost of care in their state continues to shoot up like a rocket.
New Mexico Long Term Care Costs
New Mexico is among the most expensive states for LTC so if you are a resident of this state, or you plan to move here upon retirement, be sure that you are financially ready to face the prohibitive rates of various LTC services.
Nursing homes for one charge a daily rate of $208 on average. By the way, this is only the state’s average daily rate for a nursing home but wait till you see the figures of the other towns and cities.
Most nursing homes in Albuquerque charge a daily rate of $230 for a private room. Now if you’re considering in-home care instead you better not be a resident of Santa Fe as home health aides in this city are paid $26 per hour for helping elderly and disabled individuals with their activities of daily living (ADLs) such as eating, bathing, dressing, toileting, transferring, and continence. Mind you, that $26 is not yet inclusive of hands-off care like cooking and meal preparation, housecleaning, washing of laundry, and the like.
Childless or unmarried elderly folks who are living by themselves usually require homemaker services apart from custodial care. Homemaker services comprise of the above-mentioned house chores and these are performed by a personal care assistant who is affiliated with a home health care agency.
In New Mexico the ongoing rate for homemaker services is $23 per hour but it can be higher in other areas such as Santa Fe and Albuquerque as these are densely populated.
Perhaps these numbers are enough to explain how high New Mexico long term care costs are and they can only get higher in the years to come. You can save yourself, though, from potential financial losses if you would consider planning your LTC today.
