Cardiovascular disease refers to a series of disease involving the heart and blood vessels, and even commonly used by people to refer to hypertension.
Hypertension is basically the elevated high blood pressure in the arteries, which makes the heart to work harder so the blood can circulate through the blood vessels; systolic and diastolic are the two measurements referring to the contraction and relaxation of the muscle between beats. A normal blood pressure must be from 100-140/60-90 mmHg, so if frequently the blood pressure is at or above 140/90 mmHg it is considered high blood pressure. Not differently from other health conditions, hypertension is also classified in two types which are primary and secondary hypertension. Primary refers to hypertension that is not caused by an underlying disease, and secondary hypertension refers to the one that is caused by other conditions that affect the kidneys, arteries, heart or endocrine system.
High blood pressure is one of the major risk factor for heart attacks, strokes, and arterial and kidney diseases, also those with hypertension have a shortened life expectancy ...
... and even though lifestyle changes help with this condition, in most cases medication is necessary. This condition is mostly present in adults than in young people, and very rare in newborn babies. A person with high blood pressure may not experience any symptoms for many years; this is why Hypertension is often referred to as ¨ the Silent Killer¨. On the other hand, some people may experienced vertigo, headaches, shortness of breath, and blurred vision which can be good since it will let an early diagnosis and treatment be provided. Unfortunately, in most cases, hypertension is detected when the person has already suffered a heart attack, stroke or any other fatal condition.
There are some ways to treat hypertension, first of all, lifestyle changes play an important role when trying to lower blood pressure and have it under controlled, and depending on the magnitude of hypertension, a drug therapy must be started. When a person´s blood pressure reading is greater than 120/80, should be encouraged to make life style changes such as: losing weight, eating habits must change and start consuming more fruits, vegetables , low fat dairy product, less saturated and total fat. Additionally, reduce sodium and alcohol use, and begin an aerobic exercise routine as many days as possible during the week for at least 30 minutes.
High blood pressure is classified as:
• Normal blood pressure: less than 120/80
• Pre-hypertension: between 120/80 - 139/89
• Hypertension: greater than 140/90
• Stage 1 Hypertension: between 140/90- 159/99
• Stage 2 Hypertension: 160 /100 or greater
In addition to life style changes, when hypertension is diagnosed, a drug treatment will be prescribed that can vary from one medicament or a combination of them depending on the results of the regular based blood pressure readings. The most common types of drugs used to lower blood pressure and stabilize it are diuretics, enzyme inhibitors, receptor blockers, beta blockers and rennin inhibitors among others. The target is when taking medication is to lower blood pressure to at least 140/90, and 130/80 for those who suffer from a kidney disease or diabetes. It is important to do a follow up after the goal is reached and visit a doctor two to three times a year, and why not? continue exercising in order to maintain it.
