Ignition modules will often appear to work when an engine is cold but the transistor circuit within the module will begin to break down as it heats up. Ignition modules are triggered by hall effect sensors or magnetic pickup coils. These can also fail but are less likely to do so than ignition modules or ignition coils.

Identifying Symptoms of Faulty Ignition Coils

Misfiring of an engine is often a symptom of a faulty ignition system. The entire engine operation might be crippled as a result of misfires and result in a severe loss of power and reduced performance. Sometimes, problems in the ignition system may not be obvious right away but the problem will become gradually worse until a failure occurs.

Ignition problems may not always be related to the ignition coils. Modern vehicles often have a combined ignition coil pack which is controlled by the vehicle’s computer or ECU.
