Chlorine is highly poisonous, corrosive, and has a suffocating odor which should be removed from drinking water using any of the different crystal quest filters that are available. To purify the drinking water supply in America, chlorine is used, due to the property it has to kill bacteria.

Water that was unsafe for drinking, because of bacteria causing infectious diseases, plagued people for years. That is the reason the United States commenced to use chlorine to kill bacteria in water. Chlorine was labeled as safe, because when it was added to the public water supply and destroyed the bacteria causing disease, the mortality rate began to go down.

A dangerous carcinogenic, trihalomethanes which can raise cancer risks, is the result of the combination of chlorine and organic matter found in the water supply. These carcinogenic characteristics, were proven in 1992, by researchers from the Medical College of Wisconsin at Milwaukee. An epidemiologist and colleagues from Harvard, established statistics on cancer risk associated with chlorinated drinking water, by using a process called meta-analysis. The 10 most important studies of the risk of cancer and the inclusion of chlorine to tap water, underwent the meta-analysis. The statistics that were discovered, proved that people who regularly drink water that has been chlorinated, showed a 38% rectal cancer risk increase. This same study showed that there was a 21% bladder cancer risk increase, for people using chlorinated drinking water for long periods of time.

Disinfection by-products, referred to as DBP's or trihalomethanes, are in chlorinated tap water, and used by approximately 90% of the American people. Joseph M Price, MD wrote the book Coronaries/Cholesterol/Chlorine, which mentions some very disturbing facts. Joseph Price states, that chlorine by-products found in drinking water are a main agent causing arteriosclerosis which can result in a stroke or heart attack. He reports that these by-products, Trihalomethanes, are created in our drinking water supply when chlorine comes in contact with organic matter like twigs, leaves, and other agricultural chemicals that end up in the water supply.
