While a toothbrush holder is not exactly the first thing that springs to most people's minds when considering the visual potency of a bathroom, the seemingly unimportant details are often what make the most powerful initial impression. Even if its primary function is to simply hold and store a toothbrush, every single one of these items is a reflection of the underlying theme of the restroom. Though choosing the ideal model of such a straightforward item may seem like a simple process, a surprising number of options exist, requiring consumers to balance several factors when calculating their choice.

Physical Composition

When it comes to selecting the material from which the toothbrush holder will be constructed, consumers must weigh two distinct options during the selection process; appearance and functionality. The appearance of the restroom accessory is, by design, almost always dictated by the overall theme of the bathroom itself. From the overall standpoint of physical performance however, general cleanliness and the ability of the item to remain resistant to the growth of germs are the primary criteria ...
... by which it will be judged.

Bacteria and mold are more likely to form on porous construction materials; ceramic, plastic, and chrome are generally the most commonly available materials that provide the correct blend of bacteria resistance and thematic customization. Chrome is aesthetically unobtrusive, blending seamlessly with any possible stylistic theme, while plastic and ceramic are available in basically any color option that may be required. The difficulty in preventing the growth of harmful microorganisms and the collection of dirt on surfaces such as wood or rubber has led to their falling out of favor as a construction material.

Hanging Option Vs. A Stationary Option

Attachment of the toothbrush holder is usually accomplished by a suction cup stuck to the back of the unit, by sticking the unit to the wall with specially made glue, or by screwing the unit into a stud located in the wall itself. Essentially, moving from suction cup, to adhesive, to screws, offers an increase in overall mounting stability at the cost of overall mounting mobility. Regardless of mounting method, the open nature of the mounted unit creates the free flow of air across the surface of the toothbrush, which, can result in a reduction of bacterial growth.

Whether it is simply a cup or something equally as easy to make, a standing toothbrush holder appeals to many consumers based on cost and simplicity. The cuplike design of the standing holder has the unintended side effect of allowing stagnant water, and each of the microorganisms that come with it, to sit inside of it. Further, just like a container that is left on the glass surface of a table will eventually leave a ring behind, a standing holder will eventually have the same result on the material that it is sitting on.
