A Quick Note On Cpap Supplies: Maintenance And Cleaning
CPAP filters and tubing are critical CPAP supplies that help keep CPAP therapy at peak performance. All CPAP machines use tubes and filters; some machines use both a disposable filter that captures finer particulate, and a washable foam filter for removal of larger debris. Consistent maintenance of these CPAP supplies is crucial to making sure you continue to get optimal CPAP therapy. Keeping the air intake valve as well as the area surrounding it free of debris and any other possible obstructions is imperative. Fabrics such as sheets and comforters, curtains, handkerchiefs, and similar materials can quite easily block air into the valve, and when they do, they will inhibit the functionality of your CPAP machine.
It is important to keep in mind that while all CPAP tubing is universal (making maintaining these CPAP supplies a snap), most CPAP machine brands will have their own individual filters and other CPAP supplies. All filters are NOT alike. Many CPAP supplies are different and using the wrong ones will provide less than ideal performance, and could affect the longevity of the machine.

The regularity with which you need to replace or clean your CPAP supplies will vary depending upon many factors. The environment in which your machine operates is the largest of these factors. Check your CPAP supplies frequently. If your washable filter is clogged, it needs to be cleaned. When the disposable filter is dirty, it needs to be replaced. If the CPAP tube is cracking or smells of mildew, it should be replaced as well. Some CPAP supplies are meant to be disposable. Do not, for instance, try to save money by washing and reusing the disposable filters. Other CPAP supplies such as CPAP mask cushions and CPAP headgear should be washed on a consistent schedule. In fact, a CPAP mask and its cushion should be washed daily. Only appropriate cleaning products such as mild soap and water should be used as some products could degrade or cause harm to the face.
CPAP tubing is one of the easiest CPAP supplies to maintain. Since all CPAP tubing is universal, there is no guesswork when it comes to replacing it. The tubing is one of the more important components of a CPAP machine setup. It therefore needs to be consistently cleaned, and regularly maintained or replaced when necessary. When properly cleaned, CPAP tubing will last up to a year. All that is required to maintain the CPAP tubing is to remove it and clean it on a regular schedule; ideally, every day. It can then be hung to air dry. It is important to inspect the CPAP tube for dried or cracked areas inside the tubing or the rubber ends. These, and stretched areas from regular use indicate that the time has come to replace the CPAP tubing. Because CPAP tubing is easy to replace and inexpensive, it is recommended to have a few extras in case one fails. Moreover, replacing the CPAP tube on a regular schedule will help to reduce sinus congestion and cold symptoms that can be caused by buildup inside the tube.
