As an HGV driver, you will tour all over the country and see interesting places one normally needs to pay to be able to visit. The career has an earthy feel to it and it is entirely result-driven. Once you complete your assigned task you are free till you take up the next job. However, the job also needs enormous power of concentration and a highly disciplined attitude. The job pays pretty well and one can go up to about forty thousand pound per annum. In order to become a HGV driver one has to undergo HGV driving lessons and driver training for gaining a special driving licence that is issued by the DVLA or Driver Vehicle Licensing Agency. The driver training is for theoretical aspects such as driver hours and health and safety besides loading, customer care and driver security. This aspect of training is called the Driver’s Certificate of Professional Competence. The category “C” will qualify you for driving a truck while the “C+E” category will qualify you for articulated Lorries and trailer attachments to your cab. There are several HGV driving centres throughout the UK. There are some that offer fast track and more intense ways to becoming a registered HGV driver.

There are different types of HGV driver vacancies such as the Class 2 for those that have a category C type of HGV licence. You can drive rigid vehicles more than 3.5 tonnes with trailers up to ¾ tonne. With a C+E licence you can drive wagons over 3.5 T and trailers over ¾ T. Once you are a certified HGV driver you can apply for a variety of HGV driver jobs and there are tens of thousands of these in the UK. These jobs range from short drops to international deliveries so you will have a lot of flexibility in choosing the direction you will like your career to be headed.
