Building a home is all about making choices. Choices you might have to face later on are awnings and pergola designs, especially if you want coverings for areas such as patios, pools, and gardens. If you have yet to decide on this matter, here are a few points to consider.

Awed by awnings

Awnings are frameworks found on windows or doors. Awnings were mostly used for homes for covering spaces like a patio. They were popular in earlier times due to lack of air conditioning units. The awnings allowed air crosscurrents to flow through the home; thus making it cooler. Its simple design also allowed households to keep their windows open even with rain flowing outside.

Later on, commercial places like restaurants, hotels, and coffee shops started using awnings. These functioned well in protecting customers against the sun and light drizzles. Colours for awnings today usually reflect the company using it. You can see many that blend right in with a firm's logo. Some even have a company's emblem printed right on it. Perfect examples are hotels and coffee shops using these on their front steps. Their awnings function ...
... as possible advertising, too, given that these have a firm's trademarks.

Designs and materials for awning covers have evolved over the years. Prevalent materials, in the past, included cotton, vinyl, and polyester yarn. Today, other common ones include acrylic and polyester fabric. All these are practical coverings, as they can provide shade while providing protection from the elements.

Supporting materials for the awning's framework include iron, steel, and wood. Wood was one of the earliest ones as timber was more available. As time progressed, however, iron and steel became more prevalent. Iron and steel are sturdier and prove to be more durable in the end.

Design changes also took place over the years. Retractable awnings today lord it over as these provide usage ease, style, and durability. Different retractable awning models are easy to attach and operate giving the perfect amount of shade when needed. Its style and durability also make it a worthwhile investment as it exudes a modern look while providing necessary support.

Perfect Pergola designs

Pergolas are garden features that form shaded walkways or passages. In some places, pergolas are used as passageways or sitting areas because it has coverings. Compared to awnings, however, pergola covers are woody vines. These vines climb from the supporting pillars, and onto a sturdy open lattice.

Pergola designs vary from one place to another as there are many possible materials to use. Steel structured pergolas are common in modern gardens. Other pergolas available may combine stone and iron. Vines covering these frameworks are numerous, too. For instance, some people use grapevines, while others use bougainvillea. Of course, there are also those who use other ornamental plants.

Deciding on possible awnings and pergola designs may be better if you speak with a landscape architect. This person can present drawings so you can see how one design blends with another. The professional can also state how to maintain the layout you choose.
