It is said that for as long as man possesses a soul, believes in gods, and seeks communion with the gods, sacred music will always have a special place in society. This does not come as a surprise because spiritual music speaks to both our conscious and subconscious selves as well as speaks of our deepest desires and longings. So, we listen to spiritual tracks for many purposes – to heal our bodies and souls, to gain wealth on earth and in heaven, to attain success and knowledge, among other life-affirming goals.

Among the languages used in sacred music, Sanskrit is undoubtedly the language of the gods and for good reasons, too. It is, in fact, one of three of the most preeminent languages of the ancient and modern worlds with the other two being Greek and Latin. It should be emphasized, furthermore, that Sanskrit predates these two other languages by thousands of years and yet it is still in use today even among the young people especially in India.

Sanskrit is of great importance in three major religions - Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism. In both ancient and modern times, it is the primary liturgical language ...
... used by these religions especially in their sacred music. It is, after all, perfect in every way possible, just as the gods intended their language to be.

The story goes that Sanskrit was introduced to humanity by the eternal Sages of Santana Dharma together with Vedas, Upanishads and Puranas. Even the Panini grammar of the language has been blessed by Shiva, the Hindu god of change and destruction in both their positive and negative forms. So the use of Sanskrit in spiritual music makes perfect sense.

As previously implied, Sanskrit has its origins in the Vedas, thus, explaining the prevalence of ancient texts written in the language. The oldest evidence of Vedic Sanskrit is found in the Rigveda, which dates back to 1500BCE and is widely considered as the origins of modern European languages including English.

At the core of Sanskrit literature, including sacred music used in the abovementioned major world religions is a rich tradition of the arts and sciences. On one hand, literary works include poems, drama, stories and songs depicting every aspect of human existence including love, lust and life. Philosophy and religion are discussed in great detail in the language.

On the other hand, scientific and technical works are also discussed using the Sanskrit language. The revival of the ancient language in modern times is truly well under way. Indeed, the gods have ensured that Sanskrit is perfect for every aspect of human life.

Even mathematical and grammatical accuracy of the Sanskrit language can be found here.

Aside from the Vedas, the Upanishads are the secondary source of the Sanskrit language. These are philosophical texts handed down through oral traditions, of which there are over 200 known traditions.

In conclusion, Sanskrit is of great importance in sacred music because it is the language used in passing down the divine wisdom earthly knowledge of the gods to our ancestors. In learning and listening to Sanskrit via the Vedas and Upanishads, we come to understand the universe and our place in it.
