Aromatherapy dates back to ancient times and is often mentioned throughout the bible. In ancient times, essential oils were used in baths and as perfumes. In biblical times essential oils were used for anointing and protection. I enjoy creating my own aromatherapy products using pure essential oils, herbs and botanicals. It is a great way to express my creative side. I first began making products when one of my cats got sick because they drank water from the bucket of cleaning solution I had mixed. I have made many different aromatherapy products since then. I have blended massage oils, perfumes, natural skin products, herbal salves, and room sprays. If you are interested in purchasing essential oils or aromatherapy products you might want to know a few basics about essential oils first.

Essential oils are derived from the leaves, flowers, stems, roots, seeds, bark, fruits and resins of plants and are 50-100 times more potent than the actual plant or herb they are made from. Usually the more expensive the essential oil, the less of it you will need to use. There are also many different ...
... families of aromatherapy smells. Citrus, Floral, Veracious, Camphor, Spicy, Resin, Woody, and Earthy are the majority of the aromatherapy smells. There are approximately 400 plants that can actually produce essential oils and we only use about 300 of them. Essential oils also contain many therapeutic properties. Therapeutic properties include antibacterial, antiviral, anti fungal, antiseptic, restorative, calming, toning, deodorant, nervine, sedative, stimulating, anti-inflammatory, decongestant, expectorant, etc. Some examples would be that lavender essential oil has calming and restorative properties, while tea tree essential oil has antiseptic and antibacterial properties. It is also important to keep natural aromatherapy products out of the reach of children and to be cautious using these products when pregnant. Whether the products are natural or synthetic, these two cautions should be used. It is also important to not use undiluted essential oils directly on your skin.

When making aromatherapy products, carrier oils and botanical / herbal products are often used in conjunction with the essential oils. These carrier oils and botanical / herbal products are also rich in nutrients and possess their own therapeutic properties. Some common carrier oils used in natural aromatherapy products are almond, apricot kernel, avocado, coconut, grape seed, hazelnut, jojoba, olive, and safflower. Some common botanicals and herbs are aloe, calendula, comfrey, chamomile, cucumber, echinacea, st. john's wort, arnica, green tea, catnip, shea butter, cocoa butter, and flower essences. It is helpful to take note of the nutrients and therapeutic properties of the ingredients being used in the aromatherapy product or natural skin product you are purchasing because it will help you make a product selection that best fits your needs.

Aromatherapy products offer pure natural products that can be used safely in your home. Whether it is a cleaning product or a skin care product. Some of my favorite products were created using very few ingredients. The sore muscle massage oil I created with peppermint and lavender essential oils in an almond carrier oil works great for me. The eye make up remover I created with rose hydrosol water and the carrier oils of grapeseed, jojoba, and olive also works for me. I even felt I got dual benefits with this product because I can utilize the hydrating properties of rose while removing my eye makeup. Somehow it makes you feel good knowing you are using pure products, whether you are creating your own aromatherapy products or purchasing them.
