Being faced with the demoralizing possibility of enrolling our elder in a senior home care program is difficult at best. A senior home care facility, while in many cases might be adequate, has a tendency to lack a certain je ne sais quoi that in home care is able to offer in droves: it is called a personal touch. This is not just figuratively, but also quite literally. In home care is typically provided by a core group of senior home care professionals that actually care enough to want to get to know who the care recipient is, and what they are comfortable with on a personal level – by actually speaking to them. Senior home care facilities, by contrast, tend to provide care by way of a virtual army of staff that sometimes numbers into the hundreds. While placement in a senior home care facility can occasionally be the most appropriate option for the safety and well-being of your loved one, another avenue, and one that is all too often overlooked, is in home care.

One very efficient way to break down the various boons and banes of senior home care facilities and in home care is by way of a garden variety ...
... “pros and cons” list. On the pro side for senior home care facilities, there is no way to deny that they are able to employ a massive team of healthcare professionals, including a team of specially trained and certified medical caregivers who really do care about every single care recipient in their care. Conversely, however, on the con side we have to place the fact that they are occasionally short handed. Unfortunately, this gives each staff member a seriously stunted amount of time for them to with each care recipient, and unfortunately, each caregiver has many patients to attend. The result being that they are simply unable to dedicate all of their attention to any one individual person’s needs. This often compounds the already fragile state of the recipient in question, since it is more conducive to confusion than it is to recovery.

Senior home care (in the recipient’s home, as opposed to a facility), by contrast, is almost a complete opposite. In home care, gives you access to specially trained senior home care professionals who are able to focus all of their efforts on a single care recipient’s needs. They are able to have time available for the little, yet important things, such as conversation, or even play cards, and when the person in their charge needs a hand to get out of the recliner they’ve had in the same spot in the living room for the past six decades, that senior home care professional is there to make sure they don’t fall over. They are in a position to learn the specific nuances of their patient’s day to day routine and integrate with them, rather than completely upend it.
