Starting A Candle Business - Get The Facts

Starting home based businesses is something that just about everyone seems to be taking a shot at these days. This is understandable given the fact that more and more people are looking for secondary ways of generating income given the present economic climate. However, there are a few steps to take before starting a home business:

1. Make sure that the product you will be dealing with has some appeal.

2. Make sure that the company you work with has a good reputation and pays on time.

3. If possible pick a business where you have the most control over your inventory and selling.

4. Check to see how much competition you have in your area for the same product.

5. Figure out a marketing plan for the product - how will you promote it?

One such home business opportunity that has received a lot of attention recently is that of starting a candle selling business. Though this is something that seems odd at the first glance to many people, the facts are clear:

It has a mass appeal, low competition, and the best part is that it provides the most control of almost any other ...
... business niche.

Now within the standard home based candle businesses, there are two distinct sectors:

1. Joining a Candle Company as an associate - This is the first and a little more common option. You essentially join a company as an associate - either in the MLM system, or as a direct sales agent. The benefits of this option are that you don't have to worry about manufacturing the product and are give some direction on how to market it. The downside is that you lose some profits to the company, you have to buy before you sell, and that you have limited control over the product and your business.

2. Starting A Candle business with a kit - The other kind is where you can purchase a candle making kit, and use this to produce your own candles of various kinds. This provides a little more profit margin, but consumes more time. You also exercise much greater control over the products, but this also means that you are responsible for almost everything.

Each option suits different people. Which ever the option, however, it is important to ensure that the product is useful, and has a USP (unique selling point). Remember that you will need to give the customer a reason to buy the product from you instead of just making a run to Walmart or another store nearby.

The USP may be the special ingredients that you use, or the custom scents that you can provide with each candle. It may be the special pricing that you have, or you may find a way to offer a complementary product with each purchase. No matter what it is, it must be unique.
