It’s now universal truth that iPhone is one of the best smartphones. Today, millions of new units are sold by Apple every year. Believe it or not, the iPhone OS with support of Safari browser has fascinated web developers. The reason is simple –Safari supports tremendous web features and facilitates iPhone web developers to work on sophisticated web based apps. If you haven’t seriously thought about the power of the web, especially for iPhone platform, now is the time to get familiarized with tools and techniques required in iPhone website development.
Every iPhone user knows the power of Safari on iPhone OS. This browser is known for better site-seeing. It is available for all Apples iDevices like iPhone, iPad and iPod. It has great CSS3 and HTML5 support. The browser provides a lot of resources to iPhone website developers.
I know that for users, app means software that they download from iTunes store and install it in their device. But, developers are nowadays working on website based applications that use features of HTML, JavaScript and CSS and deliver performance like an app does. In some cases, developers ...
... create a tiny app (downloadable like other apps) and rest of the stuffs is accessed by browser.
This article discusses about the three steps for developing a functional web based application. These three steps are: design, coding and testing. Although before be proceed, here are some advantages of web based apps over native apps.
o Developers need not to go through approval process.
o Website can easily be optimized for cross-platform support. Such web app can be opened in any OS like Android, Blackberry, etc.
o No need to learn Objective-C.
o If your services are payable, you don’t have to share it with Apple
Design
There is not a big difference between working on the design of a web app and native app. Whether you design it on paper or use desktop software, the wireframe remains similar. You can create a rough design on paper and then use desktop applications like Adobe Photoshop or OmniGraffle. It is easy to work on these desktop apps.
Coding
Here comes the tricky part of web app development process but it is still not as difficult as in native app coding. It is important to know the way Safari works. I inform you that there are subtle differences between browsers in iPhone and iPad. Developers also need to know how form-select boxes work. Though the important thing is that Safari provides great support to CSS3 and HTML5 and with this, developers can add cross-browser compatibility with an app.
Testing
It’s a crucial part of iPhone website development. Testing process is complicated but it becomes easy when you familiarize yourself with couple of tools. Following are those tools:
Liveview
Liveview is pretty good testing tool during the initial coding phase. The software lets you broadcast an image from desktop onto your phone to check what the end result will look like. Use this tool to check the text size and visual details too.
Using the iPhone Simulator
It’s better to download latest versions of the SDK and use Apple’s official iPhone OS simulator instead of using third party emulators; which are of course waste of time because none of them work perfectly.
PhoneGap
This application can be the game-changer for web developers. Use this application if a mobile app has been created in HTML, CSS and JavaScript and you want to run it natively or want to see in App store. PhoneGap compiles web codes for the native use on the operating systems like iOS, Android, Symbian, Windows Phone and BlackBerry.
