In my career as a website designer and internet marketing I have faced several challenges. The worst of which is convincing clients when it is time for a website redesign. I often have clients approach me with a website that was created by another designer several years ago. These clients often want me to put together an internet marketing campaign for them. This is great news for me – a new client. However I’m always a little nervous at first when a client throws an old website at me and wants me to get traffic to it.

The problem is that even 2 years can be old for a website. It is hard to put a ROI on website redesign. Instead, you need to think of the money you are loosing if you drive traffic to an old website.

For example, I had a client who had a $1,000.00 budget a month do drive traffic to his site. He turned down my advice to redesign his website first. Its not that the website was bad, it was just older and out of date. (Let’s remember, the company website may very well be the only impression a consumer gets of a company before ...
... making a decision to make a purchase.) Needless to say, after 4 months his traffic to his site increase dramatically, however he was not getting any conversions. This can mean one of two things. 1) The marketing strategy we had (keywords chosen, social media discussion, etc) was not relevant to his business and when visitors were getting to the site, they were leaving quickly because it was not what they expected; or 2) The website layout sucked. I’m convinced the issue was number 2. However, how do you put a quantitative measure or the theory that the “website sucked”.

Overall, I was able to convince the client that I was not some website designer who was trying to up sell him, but instead a colleague who didn’t want him waste his money on internet marketing that was leading to a poor website. Eventually he did do a website redesign and within 2 days he received a lead through the website.
