Wedding ceremonies are full of great traditions and symbolism, some dating back hundreds of years, and others older still. These are the kinds of things that make weddings so special to not only the bride, the groom, and their families, but to all in attendance.

Every little touch, and each moment, has a carefully considered reason for being a part of the ceremony. This is an event which has been rehearsed by millions of people dating back to forgotten generations, and over time it has been perfected into the modern wedding ceremony we are all so very familiar with.

There is something very special about being a part of these traditions, but creating our own traditions can be just as powerful. Some families have great wedding traditions, and if you are inspired to do so, there is no reason your wedding cannot be the start of a new one. So long as there is a carefully considered reason for the inclusion of an event, the wedding ceremony is yours to design and fill with all the meaning and purpose you wish.

Even in the broader spectrum, there are new traditions being added to the Christian wedding in modern ...
... times. It continues to be an evolving ceremony, and some of the most recent additions are wonderful ideas, well worth including on your own wedding day.

Unity Candles have been used for at least the past forty years as a beautiful and unique ritual of joining for the bride and groom, as well as their families. A unity candle is typically a large candle representing the new couple, with two smaller ones to either side which represent the individuals.

Members of both the bride’s and the groom’s families will come up to the alter and light the two smaller candles--often the mothers--and then the couple will light the main candle together. It is a stunning moment, which creates a real sense of togetherness. The families come together, and the bride and groom become one, in the lighting of their unity candles.

For those who have passed on and cannot be in attendance, one beautiful tradition is to light wedding memorial candles in honor of the deceased. These can often be personalized to include multiple names, or Wedding Memorial Candles can be lit for each of those no longer with you.

No matter your situation and ceremony, these are ideas to consider as you plan for your big day. Sometimes the newer traditions are just as good as the old ones, and many would agree that these enhancements are the difference between a typical wedding and a great one.
