Bridging The Gap: Using Home Accents For Compromise
There comes a point in any romantic, committed relationship when both parties evaluate whether or not they should move in together. If the answer is yes, a series of events snowball until the inevitable blow up over what to keep and what to toss. No matter what, both parties become fiercely loyal to their own personal “stuff” and don’t want to concede. In most cases, the stalemate is eventually resolved by one person relegating their stuff to storage or the basement (i.e. the “man cave” or the place where all gross leather recliners and neon beer signs go to die). But it doesn’t have to be this way.
Before moving day, consider going shopping with your significant other (and soon to be roommate) and choose 3-5 home accents that you both like. This way, you’re already working together to create a space together, rather than apart. You can hold a joint garage sale and preemptively agree to reduce your stuff by half. Once you’ve sold the items you both no longer need, put that cash towards the pieces that you both like or try buying an investment piece like a new couch or television. Everytime you sit on ...
... it or watch it, you’ll be reminded that it’s an item you both contributed to.
Another way to mitigate the problems that occur when you move in with a significant other is to identify the items that you believe are truly awful (for example, his cheaply framed highschool football jersey) and figure out a way to assimilate it into your new space in a way that is more sophisticated. You could take a rugged black and white photo of the jersey and frame it beautifully for the coffee table, for example. Or you could try hanging the jersey in a secondary room like an office or study. Compromising and respect are paramount when performing this step. As they say, one man’s trash is another (wo)man’s treasure.
Finally, instead of gripping on to your own style, try to relax and let your new space occur organically. Even if you prefer a French country style and he’s a stark contemporary guy, there’s always a way to combine pieces for a style that’s all your own. In fact, mixing and matching is one of the biggest trends in home accents and décor right now! Always remember that style is subjective and there’s no “right” or “wrong” way to decorate a home.
