Virgin Media Going To Provide Free Wi-fi Service In Summer In London Tube

Virgin Media, the popular cable giant has won a bid. The bid was for providing free Wi-Fi in the London Underground at the time of Olympic Games which are to be held summer season. Moreover, it will be a long-term provider of paid access in the stations in subway, after the summer season also. It has been decided that service will start in the month of July in the year 2012. Virgin has the partnership with London Underground, and its aim is to outfit more than 80 Tube’s stations with Wi-Fi at the time of Olympics. Besides, it expects to have more that 120 outfitted by the end of 2012. But, adding service to Tube’s tunnels was considered unfeasible which is why only escalators, platforms and ticket will be able to get the Wi-Fi service.

According to Gareth Powell, director of strategy and service development at London Underground, this latest innovation is wonderful news for Tube customers. Those customers now have access to emails, web and social media underground for the first time. It is also delivered without any charge to fare payers and tax payers.

After this summer, the Wi-Fi service will expire for all, but the customers who are using Virgin Media mobile and broadband, and want Wi-Fi access in the Tube, can acquire this service into pay-as-you-go model. According to Virgin, it will also operate the network under other commercial models, but didn’t provide specifics. If the users are not Virgin customers and they don’t want to pay, then they will find themselves redirected to a free online portal with travel information of London, but they will not be able to access internet anymore.

Some more news has come from BBC in this regard. According to the news, Huawei had given another proposal to Transport for London (TfL). The proposal was to install 3G phone and data services across the Tube. But, TfL decided not to implement that scheme.
