Wisdom teeth appear at around 17 to 25 years of age or the ‘age of wisdom as this period in the life cycle is at times referred to. Wisdom teeth are basically the third molars of a human being and are the last teeth to grow. They are usually four but in some cases they could be fewer or more. Healthy well aligned wisdom teeth are effective in proper food processing and subsequent digestion.

What calls for wisdom teeth extraction then? Sometimes wisdom teeth may come out of the gum surface misaligned. This means they are not upright as they are supposed to be. They could be pointing outward toward the inner part of the cheeks, pointing inwards toward the tongue or leaning forward into the second set of the molars or away from them. They could also grow horizontally. The misalignment of wisdom teeth might potentially squeeze or cause damage to adjacent jaw bone, teeth and nerves. In ...
... cases where they crowd adjacent teeth, they make it hard to clean those teeth leading to build up of plaque and food particles. This is a good reason to undergo a wisdom teeth extraction.

Wisdom teeth may not always grow out of the gums completely; a condition that’s called impacted wisdom teeth. They remain underneath the gum surface and cause extreme pain and discomfort and in cases where they are only half way out of the gum, they leave a space that allows food particles and bacteria access into the gum causing gum and tooth disease, pain, jaw stiffness and swelling. Half erupted teeth are often positioned in a way that it’s difficult to reach them when brushing your teeth or flossing. This makes them easily susceptible to tooth decay, gum illness among other body illnesses necessitating the removal of wisdom teeth.

Good news is that you don’t have to wait until your wisdom teeth cause you sleepless nights to have wisdom teeth extraction. You just stay true to your regular dental check up visits and ask your dentist to check them out for you. He may do an x-ray to be certain about how they are positioned or are likely to position themselves when they finally surface. Your dentist may then recommend you to a specialist like wisdom teeth Newcastle or Wisdom teeth Sydney to have your tooth extraction if need be.

Wisdom teeth extraction will be a simple or complex procedure depending on the alignment of your teeth. If they have fully grown out to the surface then the wisdom teeth extraction procedure is just the same as the removal of any other tooth. If it is embedded in the gum or jawbone then the extraction of wisdom teeth becomes a bit complicated. The specialist may have to slit up the gum surface and or remove a part of bone to reach the tooth. Wisdom teeth extraction may then have to be in piecemeal to avoid removing a large part of bone. The younger you are when you have the tooth extracted the faster it heals.
