The German based Miele corporation has been making home appliances for longer than most people have been alive, and key to their success has been the engineering and production of not only efficient appliances, but ones that lead the way in durability and versatility. As some of their most widely used products, Miele vacuum cleaners are not just limited to floor care.

A wide array of interchangeable attachments makes Miele vacuums effective on all types of flooring as well as cleaning nearly every corner of the home. This is a quick overview of just some of what Miele has to offer.

Starting with floor care, there are three basic types of tools: smooth floor, carpet (ie. Berber, Shag, Saxony), and combination.

Smooth floor attachments are all very similar. Most use rows of synthetic bristles to dislodge dirt and soil while relying ...
... on powerful suction to suck up anything that has been loosened. Smooth floor tools generally fit all Miele vacuums regardless of style. This set of attachments works wonders on tile, laminate, hardwood, linoleum, rubber and stone.

On carpets, there are two basic types of attachments – electrically driven and air-driven. Electrically driven carpet tools, or powerheads, employ an independent motor mounted inside the attachment to power the brush roll. This motor can be engaged and disengaged on most Miele vacuums to allow for easy transition from cleaning carpet to using suction only to clean smooth flooring. This type of tool is ideal for thicker or dense carpet, as well as for pet owners.

Air-driven carpet attachments, or turbobrushes, use the suction of the vacuum to power the brush roll. These typically work well on low and some medium pile carpets, but generally speaking, on thicker carpets or households with pets, a turbobrush is not the best option. For this type of attachment, the brush roll is on when the suction is on, so they are not suitable for smooth flooring.

The last subset of tools is Miele combination floor tools. These come in a few slightly different styles but all have the same features. With one or two rows of retractable bristles, a combo tool features a rocker switch that extends and retracts the bristles. When retracted, the tool is set up for cleaning rugs or thin/low pile carpet by employing two felt strips that loosen dirt and debris. Once the bristles are extended the combo tool goes to work on hard flooring. As somewhat of a jack-of-all-trades, combination tools are fairly effective across smooth floors and low pile carpets/rugs. However they are not particularly suited for any specific flooring, like a dedicated attachment.

For above floor cleaning you have even more options, ranging from kits of bundled attachments to individual tools suited for more specialized cleaning. Nearly every Miele attachment is interchangeable across Miele vacuums. This means the same dusting brush that you can use on a Miele upright also fits each of their canisters.

As your most basic tools, each vacuum comes with two to three standard attachments. A crevice tool, dusting brush, and upholstery nozzle are some of the most versatile attachments that provide expanded above-the-floor cleaning ability. In addition to these, Miele offers other attachments like a universal brush, mattress nozzle, handheld turbobrush, and universal swivel brush, to name a few.

With these additional accessories you can clean your mattress and furniture, carpeted stairs and upholstered furniture, as well as ceiling fans, on top of cupboards, air vents and nearly any other nook or cranny throughout your home.

Aside from individual vacuum attachments, Miele also has several kits that combine the best of these tools in convenient carrying cases, specially designed for specific cleaning tasks. For instance, the Miele Cat and Dog kit includes a flexible crevice tool, handheld turbobrush, activated carbon filter, and a hygiene cap. These tools are ideal for pet owners in that this collection provides the ability to further remove pet hair and odors from the home. Each accessory kit is designed in this way – with a specific purpose or cleaning task, in mind.

From detailing your car and cleaning your computer to dusting around delicate items and pulling up ground in soil and hair, Miele offers a variety of attachments to suit nearly every household cleaning need. And, pairing the right tool with the task at hand is the surest way to get the best out of any Miele vacuum cleaner.
