People say things about kids who go to therapeutic boarding school, but am one of those who went and I believe it was one of the best experiences of my life. My formative years were spent in a home with supportive and caring parents. We even lived in a good neighborhood and I grew up with a fun bunch of kids.

But things, as they always do, changed when I entered high school. It wasn't long before my tightly knit circle of pals started to drift apart. I tried out for, and got a spot on the basketball team, so I took advantage of the chance to hang out with some of the other guys on the team. One of the best things about this new circle of friends was that they attracted a lot of girls.

I had never had much luck with the opposite gender and was thrilled to be invited to parties where they would be present. These were parties where people who exercised directness and ego got the girls. I wanted to be like them, so when I was dared to challenge a Senior named Kent to a drinking contest, I accepted.

I was severely outclassed in this match. I managed to down a decent amount, but in the end, I wound ...
... up unconscious. When I came to, everyone patted me on the shoulder and congratulated me for me efforts. I liked being the focus of everyone's attention, so whenever given the opportunity, I drank. I went from social drinker to alcoholic in a fairly brief amount of time. I was finally getting the attention I had always wanted and in order to maintain it, I thought I needed to drink. Although rapidly enough, I was drinking to feel better instead of drinking to get the girls to notice me.

One Sunday, I noticed that I was spending the morning by myself in my basement, sipping a beer. My Mom and Dad tried to intervene, but I just ignored their advice. Eventually, they told me that I had to change my attitude or I would get sent to one of those schools for troubled boys. I smugly declared that they'd do no such thing and that there was no way I was going to a therapeutic boarding school. I underestimated my parents and sure enough, found myself on a train to a school a few months later. I'd be a liar if I said that it wasn't an exhausting, challenging affair, but it proved to be the best thing that ever happened to me.
