In my career I have had more than my fair share of hotel and motel experiences. I have vacationed with and without my family, and have used hotels for business over the years. I never really felt at home in a hotel. My sleeping patterns challenged, no matter how nice the amenities, the hotel never really made me feel like I was “at home”. At the time, it didn’t really matter to me, as I was away on business, and it was one or two nights. Yet as the years went by, I asked myself the same question? Why? Why do I feel more relaxed in a private cottage than in a luxurious hotel? In travelling with the family, and especially with all the kids, that question would creep up more and more, why? Then one day, as I was sitting down by the water, reading the local newspaper, it hit me, “you feel more at home in a home, than in a hotel room.” This is how I came to be an owner of my own cottage, and decided to start sharing it with other families as a rental option.

Now, don’t misunderstand. Hotels definitely have a purpose for the business type. Short stays, clean linens, beds made, fresh towels, great television, ...
... mini bar fridge, room service…pick up the phone, make a call, and BOOM! Someone is there to help you. When you are in a rush and have a schedule that is filled with business purpose, the last thing you want to worry about is plumbing or wifi connections. Vacations are different for different folks. Singles and young couples are looking for action and excitement.

Family vacations are not the same. You are on a budget, and you are there to relax. You don’t want line ups to eat, or weird food you can’t pronounce. You want to throw a line off the dock and maybe catch something. You want to leave your possessions by the water without the fear of theft. You want to eat on your schedule, not someone else’s. You want to bring your own food and minimise your expenses. You don’t want to tip every time you have a need. You want to do your laundry without having to shell out another $20.00 in quarters and detergent. You want to canoe without having to sign up for everything. You don’t want to HAVE TO make reservations every time you need to eat or have a cocktail. Essentially, you want something at YOUR PACE and YOUR TASTE.

And what about the crowds, are they not more stressful on your vacation, than on the TTC Subway? Seriously, you anticipate being a sardine in the core of Toronto or Montreal when you are headed to work. When you are away with the family, do you really want to be stuck in a line up, crammed in a bus, on a plane, or in a stuffy airport where a bottle of water is the same cost as 2 cases of water back home?

You can always have a special night out in town and have a nice meal to pamper yourselves when you rent cottage. You can even have food delivered in many instances to relax and let someone else cook. Chances are that type of “room service” is not going to cost you the “Room Service” rate of dining.

And when you bring your own linens and pillows from your own home, it’s just like that favourite pair of jeans, you just can’t throw away….cuz they fit like a glove and you love them. Cottage remind your home, wherever you are, gives you a sense of safety and warmth that no other crisp, white, and starched hotel linens can ever do. The familiar smells and feels of a home, coupled with the sounds of nature and lapping waters, will bring you to a serenity that is unmatched by any crowded and impersonal hotel. Forcing yourself to migrate away from the television, the internet, the laptop, the work….will force you to spend real quality time with your family. Those are the memories that are truly special that cost very little by comparison.
