Today’s women are more career-oriented, independent thinkers and confident. Unfortunately, this go-getter’s attitude won’t spare them from long term care for women which is deemed as inevitable by long term care (LTC) experts and elder care specialists.

According to nursing home statistics, over 85% of elderly women in nursing homes between the ages of 66 and 100 are receiving intensive care. All of them are incontinent and could not talk anymore. Based on nursing home records, most of these women stood as informal caregivers to their loved ones sometime in the past. When it was time for them to receive care, they were entrusted to the care of nursing homes which are affiliated with Medicaid.

Can you figure your mother, sister, and wife in such pathetic situation? Just thinking about it makes you want to cry already, doesn’t it? You can spare the women in your life from such fate if you work now on convincing them to plan their future health care needs.

Now you’re not being advised to purchase a long term care insurance (LTCI) policy on behalf of your wife because you cannot do this without ...
... her consent. Besides, the LTCI carrier should be able to assess the health condition of your spouse before she can be issued a policy.

It’s also disrespectful of you to take your sister to an in-home care provider or an assisted living facility so that she can start negotiating. Another no-no is consulting Area Agencies on Aging behind your mother’s back. Leaver her to decide on her own especially if she is still physically capable and mentally fit to plan for her own welfare.

Sit and Talk About Long Term Care for Women

What you can do to help the women you love plan their future is to sit down and talk with them. Cite true-to-life stories of senior women in nursing homes who were once successful in the corporate world but whose lives had to take a 360-degree turn after they assumed responsibility for the LTC needs of their loved ones.

It is important that your mother, sister, and wife acknowledge the fact that one day they will need some level or form of LTC. Once you’ve succeeded in this phase you can easily convince them to look at the various platforms for LTC planning.

Perhaps telling your wife that a joint LTCI policy will work for the both of you will win her nod. As for your sister, you have to sensitively consider her status before dishing out any advice. For instance, if she is unmarried and childless you can suggest that she study the cost of a home health care agency as this type of LTC provider offers a wide range of services which are ideal for individuals who prefer to remain in the comfort of their own homes.

When it comes to your mother, be extra sensitive to her feelings to prevent her from developing negative thoughts such as your avoidance of the heavy responsibility of caring for her.

By informing them that long term care for women remains to be a hot national issue and that you don’t want them to end up in the most unpleasant situation, you will eventually get them on their feet.
