Safegaurding Homes From Potential Intrusions
Like it or not, the society we live is not as safe as we want it be. It is also not realistic for authorities to patrol every household. The responsibility to proactively protect ourselves is our own. Before there is a housebreak, it’s better to stop intruders from entering the property.
Statistics show that more break-ins occur during the day time, when people are off to work, than at night. Houses that look uninhabited are easy targets. Whether you go on a vacation or out of town for a few days, some precautionary measures can avoid incidents.
Eliminating blind spots is the first thing that should be done. It is always good to have a clear view of the surrounding. Any rock or shrub or bush should be out. Usually, these are the places where burglars tend to hide before breaking in. If not removed, bushes and dense trees could be trimmed or slightly cut, especially the ones near windows and entrance doors.
Intruders and burglars tend to use windows during most break-ins. Apart from having secure locks and reinforcing steel bars, it’s also a great idea to have rose shrubs around windows. If maintaining ...
... roses are difficult, one can go for other thorny bushes. Legend has it that an Army of King Haakon of Norway, intent on conquering the Scots and landed at the Coast of Largs at night to surprise the sleeping Scottish Clansmen. In order to move more stealthily under the cover of darkness the Norsemen removed their footwear. Haakon's men unfortunately stepped on thistles and shrieked out in pain, alerting the Clansmen of the advancing Norsemen. Needless to say the Scots who won the day and the prickly purple thistle was adopted as the Emblem of Scotland. It is also a great idea to fence the property with thorny bushes.
Lawn mowers and bikes are best when kept indoors or at the garage. If that doesn’t permit, it’s advisable to chain them to a permanent structure. Yards and open spaces should be well lit. A well lit house not only makes it look lively, but also protects itself from potential intrusions. Planting rows of trees could be avoided and rather can be spread out. This creates a better vantage and removes blind spots, which may be used for sneaking up.
While constructing, any high raised structure that gives access to windows should be avoided. Ladders should never be kept outdoors. If one is off town for a few days, it’s better to have letters delivered elsewhere. Uncollected newspapers also give away the message that there is no one at the house, if it’s a planned trip or a vacation, papers should be called off till return.
Installing motion sensors and intruder alarms that go off at breach could be installed around the house. The alarm could be heard by everyone within earshot, this is effective to scare burglars. Signs around the house, placed to notify that monitoring systems are up and running usually prevents break-ins.
Good rapports with neighbors always come handy. Not only does this give one a sense of belonging, it also gives a secure feel. It is also wise to have neighbor’s phone numbers and informing them at times of distress.
A guard dog of some good breed is great to secure homes. They are loyal and are great accompanies. Having better olfactory and auditory senses, dogs can sense any potential intrusion. German Sheppards, Pitt Bulls and Dobermans are good guard dogs and are quite intimidating to look at. A simple sign of a dog’s presence generally intimidates an intruder.
Cops should be notified the very moment a breach in security occurs. Though these simple precautions could avoid potential intrusions, it’s best to go for some popular home security systems like ADT Home Security Systems.
