Orlando Airport Wants To Opt Out Of Tsa Screening

Many cheap airplane tickets and cheap vacation packages to Orlando. The Orlando Sanford International Airport is seeking permission to use private screeners instead of Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officials.

This airport wants to join 16 other U.S. airports that are now using private screeners. TSA offers a Screening Partnership Program which helps airports hire qualified private screening companies to enforce security procedures and is overseen by the TSA.

The Orlando Sanford Airport has had its application denied twice before by the TSA.

The airport’s CEO maintains that it is not trying to boot out the TSA and that it simply wants to join a TSA program created by congress.
This program was introduced in 2002 with five airports initially participating in a pilot program. Today there are 16 participating airports, including Kansas City International and San Francisco International. Montana’s West Yellowstone airport was approved in January.

... Sanford has submitted a third request to the TSA to reconsider its application citing a stipulation included in the bill.

The Orlando Airport CEO was quoted saying “We believe in free enterprise and holding people accountable for efficiency, safety and security.”

The TSA is supposed to approve airport applications for the program so long as security is not compromised, cost efficiency is maintained and the screening of passengers and property is not adversely impacted.

The Orlando Sanford International Airport accommodated 1.6 million passengers in 2011 vs. over 35 million handled by the nearby Orlando International Airport.
