There Are Boarding Schools For Troubled Boys That Proved A Major Help To My Own Boy

One of the best and toughest things that I have ever done was sending my own boy to one of those boarding schools for troubled boys. His downward path was initiated at the beginning of the year that he started his freshman year of high school. His dearest, closest buddy, Dave's dad was transferred to a new job in Idaho. The pair of them had never really fit in with any of the other groups of guys in their school. Without his one friend, he was anchorless and roamed between the various groups that made up the social strata of his school.

It was very hard on him, since none of the other groups really included him. This is not to say that he was totally solitary, but the friends he did have had more tangible friendships with other guys. Finally, he found a place with a gang of kids who were outcasts like our son. At first glance, they were ordinary kids, but one day I noticed that some of them were always hanging out outside a liquor store in the wee hours of the morning. I asked my son about it, but he just shrugged and walked away.

I should have brought it up again, but I was scared, to my detriment, ...
... and to my son's. My son's behavior altered quite a bit over the next semester. His hygiene began to deteriorate and he was sullen and noncommunicative with us whenever we tried to talk with him. I found some marijuana in his backpack one morning and decided to have it out with him. It was not pretty as he was furious telling us that we had no more influence in his life and that he wanted nothing more to do with us. We attempted everything, from punishments to a therapist, but there was no change.

A terrible day was the one where we received word that our boy was the instigator in a violent brawl at school. Jeff, one of his new chums was put in jail for having heroin in his backpack. Try as I might, I could not invent any solutions to my dilemma. After some time, I saw a pamphlet for one of those schools for troubled girls that had the contact info for a similar school for boys. I gave them a ring and made the appropriate arrangements. Our son was livid when we informed him what was going to happen, but we got him to the school and crossed our fingers.

Thankfully, after six hard, grueling, stressful months, our son came home a different boy. His addictions were now under control and he was extremely sorry for what he had done and how he had treated his family. I am very glad for boarding schools for troubled boys like this because without them, we would have lost our son.
