It can be a nightmare of every parent and individual when fire strikes their house. Naturally the immediate response would be to protect the loved ones rather than the property. What many of us don’t think that this could be avoided if we had a fire alarm system from a reputable security company like ADT Security System. Sometimes it could also be because we must have had a cheap quality fire alarm system.

Whatever it is, you are in facing a situation that can be tremendously confusing and frustrating. But the most important thing that you need to realize is that homes can be rebuilt, water, fire and smoke damage can be cleaned; what about life? Lost lives cannot be brought back or replaced. What you need to do is be thankful that your loved ones are safe and secure.

Now after the flames are extinguished and it is safe to enter the house, the inhabitants of the house have to face the biggest trauma of their life. The critical part in this is protecting your kids and pets after the effects of the fire. Following are some of the tips that you can keep in your mind -

Opening the windows

The first and ...
... foremost step that you need to do is if the weather permits is to open the windows. Allow the harmful gases and smoke to pass away from your house. Also if possible don’t on the air conditioner and try to use the fan to circulate the air.

Remove the contents from Refrigerator

After the fire, try to keep the refrigerator and freezer closed as much as possible. A refrigerator will keep the perishable food chilled for four to five hours (if unopened). In the same way a freezer will keep the food in freezing state for two days if left unopened.

Now, as in most cases the power will be cut after a fire. So what you must do is empty the entire contents that are there in the fridge and try to make arrangements to store the perishable food at your neighbor’s house. Once the power is cut, the temperature inside the freezer and fridge will heat up and the food inside them will get spoiled.

Never consume or prepare food

You should always throw away any food that was near the fire, especially if it’s canned food. Food which is exposed to the fire may be damaged not only due to the heat of the fire but also due to the chemicals that are used in putting out the fire. Even canned and preserved food (especially in a jar) may look safe from the outside, but inside bacteria will be active and harboring the food. The bacteria are activated due to the heat of the fire.

Relocate the pets

It is very important to think about your precious member of your family i.e. your pets. Pets due to their smaller size and higher respiratory rates are more prone and vulnerable to the effects of the fire. Smoke inhalation, especially after a fire can cause serious adverse health effects on pets especially birds.

As quickly as possible, move your pets to a safer place until the fire personnel and the certified contractor checks and reviews the damages. After they do the cleanup and restoration, then you could bring them back to the house.

By following these steps, homeowners and parents can make sure that their children and pets are safe from the aftermath of the fire-destruction. This can help to reduce one of the potential causes of stress in an already stressful environment.

Being a freelance writer and active blogger, Mike likes to share his thoughts with the rest of the world and to sources out some great services offered by ADT Security Systems. As per him, the outcome of a fire accident in a house can be critical and life threatening.
