The origin of this beautiful and graceful dance lies in the north-eastern state of Manipur. It is the oldest out of all the six Indian Classical dances.


Dances of India are the celebration of life. Manipuri dance is the manifestation of deeply ritualistic tradition and vitality. The Manipuri dancers incorporate very slow and delicate movements in their entire dance performance. There are many styles of Manipuri dance. The most popular is the ‘Rasa-lila’ style. This dance depicts the relationships of Lord Krishna and Goddess Radha. There are many techniques and phases of transition from one pose to another which requires a lot of control over the body moments of the dancer. One needs to understand the various expressions, movements and poses of this dance form to master it well.
