Diesel Price Hike A New Challenge For Uk Government
This is not only affecting the people of UK but also a big challenge for the UK government how to deal with this problem in the shortest time. Diesel is one of the highest demanded fuel not only in UK but also all over the world, has been always a reason of chaos everywhere. A number of strikes, protests and campaigns has been held in UK over many decades. In 2000, a protest was made by farmers and lorry drivers aiming at to secure a reduction in the fuel duty rate on petrol and diesel. After the protest ended, the government declared a freezing of fuel duties, and ensured changes would be made to the way that goods vehicles were taxed which would include the taxing of foreign vehicles operating on British roads.
Diesel prices have always been a heating topic at the bull market in UK since 1999 till date. In present scenario too, UK motorists are facing many problems due to hike in fuel prices after the instability in the Persian Gulf which led to an unprecedented rise in wholesale costs. One of the main reasons of hike in diesel price is tax. The high cost of diesel has plenty to do with tax. Some 75% of the £1.43 goes ...
... straight into the pocket of ruling government, which then uses it to invest in things like NHS IT systems or RBS.
Brian Madderson, RMI Petrol Chairman warned that as a result of high diesel prices food prices could rise. This is because 80 per cent of the UK’s food is distributed by road and supermarkets and their suppliers could look to recoup the extra distribution costs by raising prices. He further added that with prices at the pumps rocketing, there was an overwhelming case for “reform of fuel taxation” in Britain, whose duty rates on diesel are the second highest in the EU. As a result in diesel hike it put the livelihoods of hundreds of fuel retailers at risk. Inflation for diesel is now almost double the Consumer Price Index of 3.6%. With some delivery and haulage firms adding a diesel surcharge to invoices, costs will rise faster than most people expect and stoke inflation again. Therefore, an increase in the diesel price directly or indirectly hit the common people’s pocket, mostly the poor section and threatens the ruling government as well.
