There is a serious lack of good literature on the history of stair lifts and my search ended with utter desperation. I got together a few friends to get a better grasp of the matter than wasting my time, scanning through gazillions of rubbish that tried to sell me stair lifts! With follows is a collection of all I understood from their anecdotes and explanations on stair lifts.

I found nothing particular to hold responsible for the widespread, pandemic-like occurrence of arthritis and rheumatism, but I think it is because of the indolent lifestyle of us Americans and lack of healthy foods. Nevertheless, I will not get into that just yet, rather let me speak of stair lifts.

You must already seen stair lifts in your office or at a hospital, for those who like proper definitions I would say --- stair lifts are gadgets that people install in their homes, on their stairs to be specific. Why they install stair lifts is because they have somebody in their house that cannot walk up or down the steps normally. It is not always possible for family members to drag wheelchairs ...
... up and down staircases, not to mention the hazard it poses to both the rider and the caretaker. Hence, families invest in stair lifts.

There is an interesting story behind the invention of stair lifts. I will not bet a penny on it, nonetheless it makes for a good reading and here I mention it. It is said that King Henry, VIII was injured in some form of horse race, or whatever that suited his kingly pursuits, and developed a limp! Being the king and all, he commissioned his men to make something to let him move about without much aid. This was said to be placed on the staircases of the Whitehall Palace in London. Since there was no electricity or battery power to run the contrivance, he got servants to haul it manually up and down floors.

Modern day remake of stair lifts is attributed to C.C Crispin. An amateur engineer, Mr. Crispin was working towards helping a friend who was infected with polio. Today, it might have razed a copyright war between the king and Mr. Crispin, but back then, there was nothing to stop him from naming his reformed stair lift as Inclinator.

Since then stair lifts have undergone sea changes and benefitted from latest developments in science and technology to become what is the modern stair lift, stair glide and wheelchair lifts to name a few.
