While it is easy to dismiss airsoft guns as being merely the toys of children who have been overly influenced by the glorification of guns in television programs and action movies, the reality is that there is a large and thriving community of people for whom airsoft guns are a hobby about which they are very passionate. Many people compare airsoft guns with paintball guns, and while there are certainly some similarities in the way the guns are operated and used, there are also some major differences. For example, pistols are great for close quarter engagements, sniper rifles excellent for covering a forward assault team, and shotguns for maximum firepower at close range.

Of course, real shotguns are particularly effective at close range because they do not fire a single bullet, but instead release a cloud of “shot” with each shell expended that makes it easier to hit the enemy. An airsoft shotgun, however, will shoot only a single BB, much like an airsoft rifle or airsoft pistol. The difference, however, lies in the short reload time required.

When using airsoft shotguns, your hand is always on the pump, which is also the part of the gun that you use to reload after having fired a shot. A pistol or rifle, on the other hand, requires that you move your hand to the slide or a charging handle in order to get the gun ready to fire the next shot. This is what makes the shotgun attractive among those who use airsoft guns for such simulated engagements.
