Nothing says excruciating like a tooth that has been dislocated, broken or knocked out of your mouth. If you find yourself facing such a dilemma and are in need of an emergency dentist, Fishkill dentists are ready to help. But many of us, having never had this experience, are naïve when it comes to a dental emergency. In the event that you have a tooth knocked out, take the following steps, as quickly as possible.

First and foremost, do your best to stay lucid. Although your emotions will be bubbling over, you need to remain calm so that you can locate your tooth as quickly as possible. And, yes, there may be more blood than you are used to seeing, but keep in mind that you are not going to die. If bleeding is persistent, simply apply a cold compress to the tooth socket.

Once you find your tooth, be careful not to touch the root nerves and cells. It is important to keep the nerves and cells intact in the event that surgical reattachment is possible.

Do NOT brush the tooth or rinse with alcohol, mouthwash or other substances. But, you DO want to remove debris from the tooth by rinsing it with ...
... some tap water. You will then need to store the tooth for proper transport to your dentist.

When transporting the tooth, you must do what you can to keep it moist. If you aren't squeamish, the ideal thing to do is to put the tooth back in its socket for transport. If you do place the tooth back into the socket, bite down on a piece of gauze to keep it in place. Many folks don't find this option appealing; this is quite understandable. Alternatively, you can place the tooth between your tongue and cheek or under your tongue, being careful not to swallow it. And lastly, and more commonly, you can place the tooth in a glass of milk because milk is calcium-rich.

Lastly, you will want to get a hold of an emergency dentist. Fishkill emergency dentists will be able to swiftly assess your situation to determine the best course of action.

Losing a tooth can be an alarming, painful and emotional experience. Nevertheless, you must remember to remain calm, locate your tooth as quickly as you can, keep it moist and handle it by the crown. And above all else, remember that when you need an emergency dentist, Fishkill dental experts will help restore your smile to its former glory.
