How Can Teachers Bring History Alive To Capture Pupils' Attention?

Do you remember much of the history you were taught at school? You might remember certain dates or events, but beyond that you probably remember more about events that happened within your own lifetime. Furthermore the events you remember most from history lessons are probably those that were presented to you in some tangible way.
History can be a tricky subject to teach. Many other topics can be shown to the pupil in some way. Maths can be taught by giving children practical problems to illustrate the use of fractions and division. Biology allows us to see the way we live and how various parts of the body work. Physics can be demonstrated right in front of us.
But history is very different. It belongs in the past and yet it must be taught to today's children now if they are to have any appreciation of the world around them and how it has come to be the way it is. It should not come as a surprise then to learn that school history trips can provide a whole new perspective on how the past can still exist in some senses.
Perhaps the best example of this is a trip to a museum. Many primary school trips are arranged ...
... to local museums, and it is a good way of introducing kids to a world that existed in the past. It doesn't matter whether this was a world of a few decades ago or a few centuries ago. What matters is that the children can see evidence from times gone by right in front of their eyes. It gives them a tangible hold on a life from long ago, whether it is honed arrow heads used by their ancestors or the first attempts at producing electricity.
Primary school trips are always popular because they allow the children to enjoy a day outside the classroom. But they are about far more than enjoyment. They also allow children to get a greater insight into history and their past, and how it connects us to today. School history trips never sound exciting, but in reality they are probably among the most exciting trips pupils will ever take. If they are willing to learn and listen to what the teachers have to say and to show them, they will get a view onto a world they would not otherwise have known.
Bringing history alive is what every history teacher wants to do. School trips can be an essential tool in making this easier to do. The more we learn about what happened in the past, the more we understand how and why the world is as it is today. This knowledge can stay with us for life, and this is a very good thing for it to do.
