Although Frontier is expected to continue offering cheap airplane tickets and cheap vacation packages, it will soon significantly reduce the number of cities it will be servicing as a result of Milwaukee and Kansas City losing their status as Frontier hubs.

Frontier is contracting in these cities as it tries to reposition itself for sustained profitability. Frontier was acquired by Republic Airways in 2009 and then was merged with Midwest Airlines in 2010.

The Frontier brand was maintained and to date has operated three hubs, the largest of which is in Denver. The Milwaukee and Kansas City hubs came with the merger of Midwest.

Eliminating all but the Denver hub will significantly alter Frontier’s route network and slash its presence in Kansas City and Milwaukee. Frontier says that it is pruning these hubs in an attempt to remaking itself into an “ultra low cost” airline similar to no frill rivals Spirit and Allegiant Airlines.

Frontier is looking to route as much as 85 percent of its capacity through Denver, resulting in the slashing of flight and jobs in its discontinued hubs. Ironically ...
... this retrenchment means that Frontier will end up looking very similar to what it was prior to its acquisition by Republic and subsequent merger with Midwest.

Soon, Frontier will only have 18 daily flights out of Milwaukee. By April, Frontier’s footprint there will be only about a quarter of what it was the same time last year. Flights out of Milwaukee to Dallas/Fort Worth, Grand Rapids, Kansas City, Newark, Philadelphia and Phoenix will be discontinued in April.

Frontier is planning to eliminate eight of its current 21 daily departures from Kansas City International Airport in April. Routes being dropped include Houston, Milwaukee, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle.
