I like my coffee black with little or no sugar. Sometimes I like to load it with cream, sugar and make it disgustingly sweet. I love the sickly sweet taste only when I feel lively and happy. When I’m tired or sad I like it strong, hot and bitter. I usually don’t like milk, but if I smell a really good mocha, or my grandmother’s filtered coffee, I would never refuse it.
To the younger me, it was undeniably funny to watch the adults of my family seek their morning beverages like it was their daily dose of steroids to get them up and running. When I was a little older, I couldn’t imagine the reason behind their caffeine addiction. It didn’t make any sense then, it did nothing like awaken my body or mind. Besides, wasn’t too much coffee unhealthy? Sure, it tasted good, but it wouldn’t be something that I might get addicted to. If only I had known that my fate was inevitably intertwined with coffee, I would have amended my statement then and there.
Not that I had no choice- it all started the day I found that black coffee is a miracle worker against an impossible headache. The other trigger was my friends- ...
... the innumerable meetings at various Java hangouts resulted in me getting a taste of every possible flavor of coffee, hot or cold. There’s something to the coffee that makes it a slightly better booster drink than the tea. It could be the difference in the caffeine content, giving it a distinctive acidic taste that tea fails to produce. While, tea is refreshing to some, coffee is an instant stimulant to many.
Some may argue that drinking tea results in many health benefits. So does coffee. While I was spending my Sunday afternoon, surfing the cable bought out of Time Warner’s Cable Deals, I came across an interesting program on the coffee bean. The program first addressed the disadvantages one might incur with prolonged coffee consumption. Prolonged consumption implies an obvious coffee addiction. Apart from that I learnt that coffee is not so much so a life saver as it seems. It could increase the blood pressure, your cholesterol levels and therefore increase the chances of suffering from cardio-vascular diseases.
I did feel bad after learning about the much negative side effects of my everyday savior. Later, I logged onto the Internet thinking that coffee can’t all be bad. And I was right; coffee is no evil says recent studies. Coffee can prevent the world’s most common cancer- the one in the skin. Coffee also has the ability to prevent depression in women and prostate cancer in men. Very cool. But (there’s always a but), these studies have not been rightly proven. Which is why, the results cannot be applied to every individual that drinks, on an average, 2 cups of coffee every day. Some may largely benefit, some may largely suffer.
Like me and my migraine. According to me, coffee is the best painkiller that can ward off any disaster headache. The right amount of water and coffee, without sugar is my only savior. I know that usually it’s the other way round. People complain of incurable headaches and blame it on the coffee. Symptoms of headaches especially persist when they stop taking coffee. They’re not wrong; coffee is one of the causes that evoke pestering headaches. If you had the habit of taking extremely high amounts of coffee and suddenly decided to withdraw, you’d be more likely prone to killer migraines than the average coffee consumer. This, as I found out is, the coffee-withdrawal-rebound headache.
But, there are a million other people just like me who drink coffee to relieve themselves of headaches without the use of pills. Many analgesics such as Tylenol contain what coffee naturally has-caffeine. The caffeine is used as a drug stimulant to make it work faster and effectively. I figured out that caffeine is the reason why my headaches are cured and my mind becomes less cloudy. Again, I love coffee but I limit myself to one or two cups a day. When you exceed that limit and miss out your daily dose of coffee is when the problem arises, you brain feels suffocated and gives you a headache. Then, to drink or not to drink? Of course you can, but do it moderately.
