Computer networks have existed since the 1960s, but it wasn’t until 1982 that a standardized set of rules was deployed to inter-connect a network of computers world-wide. This was called as ‘The Internet’ and it has come a long way since its inception. Traffic on the public Internet grew by 100 percent per year.

It consists of millions of domestic, academic, business, and government networks, which together carry various information and services, such as electronic mail, online chat, file transfer. The Internet helps in providing flexible work hours and location is no longer a hindrance. Apart from the limitations posed by the screen size, internet can be accessed through mobile phones, game consoles and tablets.
Internet plays a vital role in the field of education, with educational material being available at all levels. The near instantaneous sharing of ideas, knowledge and skills has made collaborative work dramatically easier. Not only can common interest groups communicate at a fraction of the cost of traditional means and share ideas, but the wide reach of the Internet allows such groups to more easily form. Whether it’s communication through instant messaging systems or internet relay chat or through social networking websites, it allows people to stay in touch in a very convenient way.

With file transfers between team members, interoffice communication gets better. Content management systems allow teams to work on document sets without destroying each other’s work. Calendar syncing helps in planning and organizing deadlines and schedule meets. With Internet access and computer literacy on the spread, collaborative works aren’t limited to businesses. Social and political activists have started to embrace it too. With high speed internet access and communication technologies evolving over time, voice and video calls over the internet have become smooth. With reduced the time delay, near instantaneous mode of communication is now possible.

With remote access available, users can retrieve and store information easily. Depending on the sensitivity of the data, users can opt encryption or authentication technologies. In the case of accountants and bookkeepers who work from home or from an other country can have access to the stored data from a server that might be in a third country. With cloud computing on the rise, businesses can cut costs on customized software and its maintenance and rather depend on third party services that provide the same. Virtual Private Networks give employees access to files and applications that are on the workstation, extending the perimeter of a corporate network to remote locations.

The Deep Web or Undernet is several orders of magnitude larger than the surface web, but since the information and resources stored on the Deep Web is not available to search engines, it remains hidden. Although an increasing amount of Deep Web content is opening up to free, only a fraction of users use it. Since most of the content on the Deep Web is sensitive, users for the most part, depend on Tor for anonymity. Onion Routing technologies like Tor are also used by journalists and governments to send and receive data over the Internet. These technologies provide complete anonymity, and the encrypted data usually has computer generated passkeys to break it.
