History is littered with things forgotten. History is littered with things forgotten. The first person to ever ride an elephant was surely an innovator, someone who changed the world and human history, for some places, but the absence of things like literacy, long life-spans and leisure time doubtless kept this brave and noble animal abuser from ever reaching our notice. Likewise, whoever first put chocolate and peanut butter together is deserving of considerable statuary the world over, in capitals and atop large buildings, something akin to a gargoyle, but sweeter. Unfortunately, history has ignored this noble personage as well, in favor of daft old men who wrote things that they argued about with other daft old men. In this light, we can consider trash receptacles. History has left out the name and noble visage of this true innovator ...
... of our species, and yet, we can erect a fitting literary tribute to his or her memory here, now, by celebrating the impact that trash receptacles have had upon some of use, in some places.

Human history has taken quite a few divergent turns throughout its course. In some places, civil society emerged from the brutal, violent and anarchic chaos of our earliest days. We all tidied up a bit, replaced tree bark and loin cloths with pants and skirts, made closed-toe shoes, washed our hair, went out on Friday nights and enjoyed relatively clean and organized environments. In the Western world, this led to democracy, literature, rule of law, modern medicine, theater, poetry, music and human rights. Our urge to place garbage securely in trash receptacles freed us up from the constant worry of contagion and disease, and let our ancestors direct their energies to other, more profitable and productive ends. One of those ends has been conquering people who did not place their garbage securely in trash receptacles, and though our ancestors visited upon them a furious wrath and a curious mixture of civility and technological know-how, our peoples are still distinguished, in my mind, by what we do with our garbage.

Visit a modern, Western, industrialized urban center today, and a person will surely encounter odd bits of trash blowing wistfully down the street, tucked in gutters, festooning the bare winter branches of trees and other foliage. It looks like it is dirty. Then, visit Mumbai, India, and wonder at the sheer, raw tonnage of garbage that is left without concern or worry on every available space. Garbage is everywhere, underfoot, stuck to people, animals, and things. In this light, it is very easy to surmise why it is that the British East India Company was so easily able to impose its will upon the Indian sub-continent: they did not have to worry about the trash. They had trash receptacles aboard their merchant and warships, and could thus turn their attentions to shooting at other, different-looking people, people who did not treat trash appropriately.

Today, Western nations still try to spread their influence and culture abroad, following in the footsteps of noble Macedonian Alexander. It is only to be hoped that we can spread our passion for organizing garbage about the globe as well.
