There are many industries across the globe whose business depends on the use of highly sophisticated machinery, and part of the routine maintenance for this machinery involves the use of an oil test lab. There are actually many different reasons for testing and observing the condition of these oils, such as the critical information it can provide to those in charge of caring for expensive industrial machines.

One of oil's primary uses is to act as a lubricant for the rapidly moving parts that exist inside many machines, to reduce the amount of friction that builds up between those moving parts and the great deal of wear it causes. Just like the machines they are used to lubricate, not all oils are created equally, and in order to ensure that the one currently in use in a machine was the right choice, a sample should be tested after a certain amount of use. If the fluid appears to be broken down or filled with an excessive amount of metal debris from worn machine parts, it could mean that a higher grade of oil is needed.

Coming across a great deal of metal debris in a sample could also mean that the machine ...
... is not running properly, causing excessive wear. This metal debris comes in the form of thousands of small particles and are the result of metal parts wearing out and breaking down, so if there is more than there should be, it means that the parts are wearing out faster than expected. Other contaminants a tester could see in a sample, such as fuel or water, could indicate other problems with a machine that must be fixed, like broken gaskets.

By getting these oils tested, the people responsible for maintaining the machines are given a great deal of information that can lead them right to the trouble areas and help them determine what must be done to fix them. One example of this is when a test is carried out and ends up showing that there is a buildup of sludge in the sample, it will let the maintenance personnel know that they need to clean out the machine before it becomes inoperable.

Working alongside an oil test lab is one of the best ways to keep an eye on the inner workings of a machine and ensure that it is in optimal working order. Doing this is an excellent way to make sure that a machine stays running and is never costing a company downtime or expensive replacements and repairs.
